The holiday was first  celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the  Civil War, slaves were declared free under the terms of the 1862  Emancipation Proclamation.</p>

        <title>Wild Edibles Workshop</title>
        <description>
          <p>Jul 02, 2026,  5:00pm -  7:00pm</p><p>Learn the basics of safe and ethical foraging wild edibles in Upstate New York. We will use a NYS 4-H approved curriculum that instructs on identifying, collecting, and preparing the flowers, leaves, fruits, and roots of local wild plants. We will not be working with mushrooms. The plants that will be available to identify and sample will be dependent on the time and location of the class. Plants may be available to sample, but eating the plants is not a requirement of the class. Adults are encouraged to attend with youth to learn safe foraging techniques. A legal guardian must sign a permission slip specific to this class for youth to attend.This clinic can be used for the non-agriculture workshop requirement for auction participants.</p>

        <title>4-H Giant Pumpkin Contest Weigh In</title>

          <p>Oct 17, 2026, 10:00am - 11:00am</p><p>Think that you can grow the biggest  pumpkin? 4-H of Cayuga County would like to see you try! Youth under 18 years of age (4-H members and  non-members) are invited to register now to join this contest to grow the biggest pumpkin.  Weigh-in will be on Saturday, October 17, 2025 from 10:00-11:00 am (weigh in is promptly at 10:30 am) at the Ward O&#39;Hara Agricultural Museum in Auburn.&amp;nbsp; A winner will be named for heaviest pumpkin. Prizes to be determined.Please complete one registration for each  participant. Registration fee includes 2 Big Max seedlings.  Payment can be made by&amp;nbsp;PayPal or in the office. Seeds may be picked up  in the office, 248 Grant Avenue in Auburn, after registration fees are  paid.Contest Rules:Participants must be under the age of 18 as of January 1, 2026.One pumpkin per participant may be entered in the contest.Pumpkins entered in the contest must be Big Max variety. They do not need to be grown from the seeds provided with the registration fee.Participants must provide the majority of the care for the pumpkin plant.Participants must make the majority of the decisions about plant care.Fertilizers and pesticides must be used safely, appropriately, and according to label directions.Participants should be ready to describe how the plant was cared for and why to the judges at the event.Participants are responsible for transporting pumpkins to the event.Pumpkins should be free of excess plant material and dirt.Circumference will be measured at the largest point.Judges decisions are final.Important Dates:Registration Deadline: Monday, June 1, 2026 or when seedlings are all claimedPumpkin Weigh-in: Saturday, October 17, 2026 at Ward W.
