Please join the Cayuga County Department of Planning and Cornell Cooperative Extension Cayuga County at the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event! Cayuga County residents can properly dispose of old chemicals and outdated supplies of hazardous products FOR FREE! This proper disposal protects human health, our community and the environment.

NOTE: You MUST be a Cayuga County resident (or be dropping off waste for a Cayuga County resident) to participate in this event. Registration is required and limited to 300 people!

Acceptable Household Hazardous Wastes:

  • Adhesives
  • 4 ft and 6 ft fluorescent bulbs
  • Button cell batteries
  • Corrosives (acids, lye)
  • Driveway sealers
  • Home Chemistry Sets
  • Household Cleaning Products
  • Latex Paint
  • Mercury and Mercury Products (i.e., thermometers)
  • Mineral Spirits
  • Miscellaneous Vehicle Fluids
  • Oil-based Paint and Stains
  • Pesticides (herbicides, insecticides, fungicides)
  • Polish and Waxes
  • Propane tanks up to grill size
  • Pool Chemicals
  • Solvents
  • Water Based Paint

Not Accepted

  • Alkaline and Rechargeable Batteries
  • Asbestos
  • Ammunition/Ordinances/Explosives
  • Compressed Gas Cylinders (other than propane or helium)
  • DEA Controlled Substances
  • Electronics/E-waste including CRTs, PCs and TVs,
  • Freon Appliances
  • Medical and Infectious Waste
  • Radioactive Materials
  • Tires (see the annual Tire Recycling Event HERE)
  • Type A or B Organic Peroxides (substances on the DOT SADT list)

Several fact sheets about various hazardous wastes are available at no cost from Cornell Cooperative Extension Cayuga County. If you would like information on motor oil, antifreeze, non-hazardous cleaning alternatives, or rechargeable and lead acid batteries call 315-255-1183.

Farm or Businesses Hazardous Waste Disposal:

CleanSweepNY hosts annual events to collect pesticides and other waste chemicals from farms, all categories of NYS certified pesticide applicators, cemeteries, golf courses, marinas, schools, landscapers and lawncare providers, nurseries, greenhouses, and other entities. They typically rotate the event each year to a different location.
