Cayuga County 4-H Market Livestock Auction

The Cayuga County 4-H Youth Fair (July 30-August 2) will culminate with the 3rd Annual 4-H Livestock Auction. Youth who participated in a 4-H Livestock Market animal project across Cayuga and Seneca Counties will auction animal projects that they have raised through the year. Bidding is open to the public, interested bidders should register in person between 12 and 2 pm at the show tent to receive a bidder number.
This program promotes the future of local agriculture. By registering as a bidder at our Annual 4-H Livestock Auction you are supporting a more sustainable food system! Join the agricultural community in recognizing and celebrating our local youth farmers. This is a great opportunity to purchase, fresh local meat while supporting our youth as they develop their entrepreneurship skills
Large livestock (hogs, sheep, goats, and steers) will be auctioned live and the winning bidder is responsible for processing. Several processors will be available on site to arrange transportation and processing. Payment is expected at the end of the auction and can be made by cash, check, or credit card.
The proceeds from initial sale of an animal go to the 4-Her who raised the animal. This provides youth the gratification of success and often provides them the seed money for their project for the next year. Proceeds from non-animal auction items and animals that are donated back for resale support the continuation of the 4-H Youth Fair.

Sponsorship Opportunities
Your sponsorship benefits the 4-Hers directly by providing awards for youth and covering the many expenses of the fair and auction, including tents, promotional materials, judge’s fees, and the auctioneer!
Sponsors can choose to donate to individual species shows or exhibits. Show sponsors will be announced during the respective species show or recognized in the Youth Building Exhibit Hall. Businesses or individuals donating in this category will also be featured in the Fair Program, CCE Facebook page and on this website.

About the Program
The 4-H Livestock Market Program teaches sustainable animal husbandry practices that produce healthy livestock for our local meat market. From start to finish, these youth learn all aspects of the market process including animal nutrition, evaluation and selection, welfare, marketing, and processing. The program runs from January to July and is taught by Erin Humphrey, an Animal Science Educator.
The program participants who raise livestock (chickens, ducks, geese, goats, sheep, cows, and pigs) will sell their animals at the 4-H Livestock Auction in August which is typically held at the Cayuga County 4-H Youth Fair. The money raised at this charity auction goes back to the youth to support their ongoing projects, save for college, etc. Those who do not have livestock to sell can still participate by attending our educational sessions and help with marketing and event planning.
