Cayuga County CCE Shop Meetings continue with “How to Read and Use a Manure and Soil Sample Analysis for Nutrient Management Decisions” with Frank Clarke, Agriculture and Soils Educator, CCE Cayuga and Hayley Brown, Watershed Conservation Specialist, Cayuga County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Reading a soil or manure analysis can be confusing. Especially when soil analyses can use different extraction methods like Melich-3, Morgan, and Modified Morgan that yield different results. Learn why certain extractions are used and how to apply the results to begin framing a farm nutrient management plan. Manure test results, combined with soil test recommendations and manure spreader calibration, form the basis for determining appropriate manure application rates to meet crop nutrient needs.
We will show you how to take a manure sample and why it matters where the sample is taken. You can then review the results and learn how to use the values to calculate nitrogen credits for the next 3 years. Call us if you would like to submit a sample before the meeting.
An introduction to NYS Agricultural Environmental Management (AEM) will be offered. AEM supports common-sense, cost-effective, and science-based decisions to meet farm goals while protecting and conserving New York ‘s natural resources.
